When I heard the title of this new primetime show on CBS, I thought it was going to be a situation comedy or comedy/drama.
But I was surprised to see that it's another dog training show following in the footsteps of Cesar Millan and Victoria Stilwell. The trainer is Justin Silver, "The Dog Guru", who is also a stand-up comic.
I wouldn't say he's a purely positive trainers as he used some hand jabs (gentler than Cesar) and the "ah-ah" sound of Victoria. And he also looks at the relationship not just between the dog and the human, but also between human to human (ala Brad Pattison).
He used a Martingale collar and called a "correction" a "cue". I can't imagine anybody calling him mean and cruel, but I wouldn't be surprised to see criticism from the PP crowd.
Anyway, the guy looks good to me. Another person to learn from.

Saw Dogs: Man's Best Friend DVD set at Costco today. It's four separate shows from PBS and/or NOVA.
Was tempted to buy it, but wanted to go home to check on Amazon's price.

Kimo has fleas
Noticed Kimo had some flea dirt on him a couple of days ago, so I gave him some Frontline even though it was a couple of days short of a month that I gave him Frontline last time.
But now he has a lot of fleas on him. You usually can't see them crawling on him, but when I comb his fur with the flea comb, some come out.
Frontline is supposed to kill the fleas in a couple of days, so you would think they'd be gone by now.
So I decided to try the garlic remedy. I gave him only about a quarter clove cut into small chunks. Even less because I ate one of the chunks and he didn't eat one of the chunks while eating his food. I guess it doesn't taste so good to him.
Well, we'll see tomorrow. The poor guy doesn't look so happy when he's scratching all the time.
[5/28/12] Gave him a little more garlic yesterday. Put the rest of the half-clove in a pill pocket so he would ingest it. Still had fleas yesterday.
And this morning, some more fleas when I combed his legs. Looks like some are young since they are small.
Decided to sprinkle some diatomaceous earth on the bedding. Well more than a sprinkle. Jojo saw it and started rolling around it and now he's covered with the powder. Well, that's fine because I see fleas on him too.
[5/30/12] Still had fleas, maybe even more than before, despite my efforts with the garlic and diatomaceous earth. So Donna went to get the Capstar. After a little hesitation, he actually ate if out of my hand. After about a half-hour or so, he got very animated and anxious and wanted to run around. Probably the fleas were biting him. So I took him out for a little while. Then about an hour of so later, he was lying quietly by the front door, like he didn't know what just happened to him.
Seems much better, but he still scratched a few times when he was eating his supper.
[5/31/12] Checked Kimo's fleas today. Didn't see any (though I didn't look really hard). But Jojo had a bunch of them. That's the most fleas on him I've ever seen. I decided to put on Hartz Ultraguard which hadn't worked for me before. But WTH, maybe it'll work on him and I wasn't using it anyway. We'll see. But I kind of suspect it'll work like how Frontline worked on Kimo. Not well or at all. We'll see..
[6/5/12] Despite my best efforts of combing out fleas and sprinkling of diatomaceous earth, the fleas are coming back. So I called the vet to ask if it was allowable to put K9-Advantix on when I had put on Frontline a week or two ago. And the lady said you need to wait 30 days. But they do have a tablet that will kill fleas in like 30 minutes and lasts a month. The product's name is Comfortis.
So I went with Donna to Kalihi Pet Clinic (nice big reception area) and decided to try out a tablet. They also carry K9 Advantix, Advantage, a product made by the Frontline people, flea spray, etc. all on a shelf on the side.
The write-up looks good. Veterinarians rated Comfortis® (spinosad) as their most trusted brand for flea control. And it's the flea control product they recommend first to their colleagues more than any other brand.
[6/15/12] Kimo's flea situation is better, but Jojo still has fleas. Went down to Kalihi Pet Center to see if they had flea powder (Melanie uses Sevin). The guy there recommended K9-Advantix. Wound up buying Adams flea & tick mist. But Jojo is terrifed of the spray bottle. Wound up spraying only one flank. But could see he had a multitude of fleas coming out of his fur. Sprayed Kimo's feet and legs too. Saw Kimo licking his feet. Hope it's not too poisonous to him. The reviews seem mostly good, though it apparently didn't work in some cases.
[10/1/12] Kimo has fleas again and tapeworm. The flea powder and flea mist evidently wasn't too successful. Put on Frontline today to see if it'll work this time. Kimo also has fleas so I was considering buying some droncit (or the generic version) from Amazon. But I noticed this product was being sold by Little City Dogs and was cheaper directly from them. So I ordered from them instead.
They also have another product Flea Control. The ingredient is Lufenuron which is the same active ingredient as in Program. Plus Flea Killer Capsules which have the same active ingredient as Capstar.
[10/23/12] The dirty little secrets of fleas
[10/26/12] Here's the update from the little city dogs. The day after giving him the pill, his poop became a runny pile. And he developed diarrhea. Maybe it was a bad batch of medicine?
Anyway this persisted, took him sample to the vet. He had the campo bacter again and I got the med for Walgreens. It was much more expensive than last time, then I noticed the dosage was 4 times what it was last time. Last time, the dose was a quarter pill. This time, it was a full pill.
Anyway, I decided to give him half a pill. The last pill was on Sunday. His poop was better. But then yesterday, he had a runny pile again. I guess I'll get him back on the antibiotic before taking him to the vet.

Plus Kimo has fleas again (along with runny poop). I don't know if the runny poop is related to the fleas, but I'm getting tired of combing through his hair for the fleas.
I went to Kalihi Pet Clinic for another dose of comfortis and saw they were also selling pill pockets for $8. The comfortis was like $90 for 6, but they sell single doses for $15. I asked about buying the large pill and cutting it and the lady at the counter asked the vet and he told her no. But when I looked at the box, the dose for the 21-40 pounds was like 560 mg oand the one for 11-20 was like 270 mg. So it would make sense to me that you can, though your vet would say no.
But I see at 1-800petmeds.com there might be a problem with comfortis and ivermectin (which Kimo is on).
Dogs receiving extra-label doses of ivermectin to treat non-responsive demodectic mange and other conditions have developed signs of ivermectin toxicity. Ivermectin is an ingredient found in heartworm preventatives such as Heartgard Plus, Heartgard, Iverhart Plus and Ivomec.
More info from the FDA Well maybe I'll skip his ivomec tonight.

then Fifi gets into it with Tuffy
surprisingly she clamped on the back of Tuffy's neck, and I pulled her up by the collar until she released.
meanwhile Joey took off
finally they settled down and I hooked up Hershey
now to look for Joey, he was waiting in the hedge right by my front gate
I opened the gate and he went in and up the steps
OK, I guess I'll let you stay there as I take the rest of the dogs to Duane's house
Cheryl went to Vegas and the caregiver didn't come yet, so Duane asked if I could take Coco
Sure.
So I have five, just not the five that I would have expected.
So we went up the street, they went up pretty well, though Coco was lagging and looking back
After we got over the hump, he was OK
So up the street and back
Joey still at the top steps and Kimo on the landing
take them back to Duane's, let Coco in the door
in the back, Jojo is still active growling to get Fifi to chase her
and she does with Tuffy following the action, and even Hershey chased one time
OK, now they're a little tired. Have them sit for treats and take them home.
Looks like Fifi and Tuffy are fine. Walking closely next to each other and sniffing the ground next to each other.
But I'll keep an eye out just in case. I'm more worried about Joey the next time I take him out with Fifi and/or Tuffy.
I guess the fight could have been worse. If Kimo was there.. Much worse.

[5/21/12] Here's another guy's experience breaking up dog fights [via dave@dwf]. Good thing my dogs are much smaller than his. Kimo's only like 20 pounds - he looks bigger, but he's skinny under all the fur. And Fifi's probably like 40 or 50 pounds, though everybody thinks she's big, which she is compared to most of the other dogs in the neighborhood. I guess I sort of use the hanging technique. Hold them by the collar until they release. And keep holding until they calm down. Takes a while sometimes with Kimo though..

Duane's dog park
Jojo arrives so take Kimo in the front.
Decide I want to take out Tuffy and Fifi. Gerald brought Hershey but I was going to come back to pick them up.
But here comes Amy with Miki. Jojo growls at them and Hershey acts up too (he did this last time too). Which is strange because he never acted that way with Miki before. Or with any dog for that matter. Probably he's acting up because of Jojo. And with Jojo, it's hard to tell what he's thinking because he growls at Fifi when he tries to get her to play with him.
So I follow Amy and Miki up with Jojo and Hershey with Kimo running up and down the steps barking. They seem OK, but then Jojo acts up again. Kimo is still in slightly excited state and he comes to the fence and I take the three out.
Amy and Miki went home by the time I get up. Tuffy sees us and I decide to get Fifi first. But Tuffy is excited and jumps down to the road.
I loop Hershey's leash on Fifi's gate. But then Jojo acts up, apparently sensing a cat under the car. Retrieve Fifi who's wagging on the steps and bring them up. Then retrieve Tuffy who's on the road.
Stanley drives past, telling me that mom is on the street walking, and Harriet is with her. She takes her to the Wong's house to sit down. And I tell her to wait until I come back. I was going to take them to Betty's house, but decided to come back. And I walk her (and the five dogs) back home.
WTH, decide to take them to Duane's house even though Duane and Cheryl are gone. Hey, Duane said "any time." (or something)
Let them in the front gate and bring them in the back. Soon enough Jojo starts growling and getting Fifi to chase him. And Tuffy joins in the case.
Coco hears the ruckus and starts barking. The door to the kitchen is open and he comes down for a little while. But then Fifi and Tuffy go in the house. Fifi is drinking water and Tuffy is eating Coco's food. Then Hershey goes in. Finds a big of goodies and is chomping. I manage to rescue a sandwich before he chomps it down.
More growling and chasing. Kimo is by the ewa gate wondering if he exit there. Then he's up the steps apparently waiting to go out that gate. Meanwhile Hershey ripped open a bag of trash and apparently found a bone which he's munching on.
Coco starts barking again and let him out (though Tuffy and Fifi want to go in). Coco comes down the steps and wants to hump Fifi. After a while Fifi gives him a snarl and he backs off though he doesn't seem scared.
Bring them to the front, had to retrieve Kimo by the leash, and give them treats on the steps. Go back in the back to give them treats, but Kimo doesn't follow again. So go back up and take them out.
Here comes Mr. and Mrs. Wong. So walk with them. Kimo wants to go home, so let him. And take Hershey home too.
Walk back up with Mrs. Wong and take home Tuffy and Fifi too.
[that afternoon/evening ... (update 6/5/13 while going through old logs)]

Or with any dog for that matter. Probably he's acting up because of Jojo. And with Jojo, it's hard to tell what he's thinking because he growls at Fifi when he tries to get her to play with him.
So I follow Amy and Miki up with Jojo and Hershey with Kimo running up and down the steps barking. They seem OK, but then Jojo acts up again. Kimo is still in slightly excited state and he comes to the fence and I take the three out.
Amy and Miki went home by the time I get up. Tuffy sees us and I decide to get Fifi first. But Tuffy is excited and jumps down to the road.
I loop Hershey's leash on Fifi's gate. But then Jojo acts up, apparently sensing a cat under the car. Retrieve Fifi who's wagging on the steps and bring them up. Then retrieve Tuffy who's on the road.
Stanley drives past, telling me that mom is on the street walking, and Harriet is with her. She takes her to the Wong's house to sit down. And I tell her to wait until I come back. I was going to take them to Betty's house, but decided to come back. And I walk her (and the five dogs) back home.
WTH, decide to take them to Duane's house even though Duane and Cheryl are gone. Hey, Duane said "any time." (or something)
Let them in the front gate and bring them in the back. Soon enough Jojo starts growling and getting Fifi to chase him. And Tuffy joins in the case.
Coco hears the ruckus and starts barking. The door to the kitchen is open and he comes down for a little while. But then Fifi and Tuffy go in the house. Fifi is drinking water and Tuffy is eating Coco's food. Then Hershey goes in. Finds a big of goodies and is chomping. I manage to rescue a sandwich before he chomps it down.
More growling and chasing. Kimo is by the ewa gate wondering if he exit there. Then he's up the steps apparently waiting to go out that gate. Meanwhile Hershey ripped open a bag of trash and apparently found a bone which he's munching on.
Coco starts barking again and let him out (though Tuffy and Fifi want to go in). Coco comes down the steps and wants to hump Fifi. After a while Fifi gives him a snarl and he backs off though he doesn't seem scared.
Bring them to the front, had to retrieve Kimo by the leash, and give them treats on the steps. Go back in the back to give them treats, but Kimo doesn't follow again. So go back up and take them out.
Here comes Mr. and Mrs. Wong. So walk with them. Kimo wants to go home, so let him. And take Hershey home too.
Walk back up with Mrs. Wong and take home Tuffy and Fifi too.

retrieve Fifi / Tuffy wants to come out too so Nalu brings him out and I leash him so Kahoa can walk him
so we go walking / Kahoa runs up street with Tuffy / Fifi want to run too, but Kimo can’t quite keep up
let Kimo go home and take home Fifi

Fifi in the house

Coco is at the gate, let them in, Fifi sees the door open and goes right in, startling Cheryl who’s watching golf

Izzy and Cubby
Bring Kimo in the front and he wants to go up the steps.
Here comes Jojo. Let him in.
Here comes Duane with Coco. Take out Jojo (Kimo lies down on pillow). Retrieve Hershey. Decide to retrieve Tuffy too. Sorry Fifi.
Tuffy doesn't pull much at first, but then begins pulling more later.
Go to Duane's house. Hershey howling at Duane for food. Quiet them down a bit and give them treats.
Practice walking up by Duane's house. Stop when Tuffy starts pulling. Back and forth.
Take Hershey home and give them a few treats.
Go to see if Kimo wants to go out. Saw he pooped in garage. Peed too.
Take Tuffy home.
See Kahoa by Roy's wall, petting Kit Kat (Jennifer's cat). Nalu is mowing yard.
Jojo reacts to Kit Kat, wanting to chase him. But Tuffy is pretty cool.
Kahoa wants to walk with me. Hand him Tuffy's leash. Tell him to stop when Tuffy starts to pull. He does pretty good (both of them).
Nalu brings the puppies to the yard. Jojo comes over to sniff. The dark one is Izzy (femail). The light one is Cubby (male). They're catahoula-huskie mixes. Born in December 2011.
The interaction goes pretty well with Jojo mostly behaving himself. The puppies are excited and mostly playful.
So I'd say it went pretty well.
Home. Take Kimo out for short walk (and more poop) with Jojo tagging along.

Taking a nap near the front door where Kimo was taking a nap too (I was inside. Kimo was outside). Then here some fierce barking. It was Nalu walking Izzy and Cubby with Kahoa walking Tuffy.
Looked around for my hat and took Kimo up. I don't know who started it but probably Izzy came over to meet Kimo in a way that Kimo felt uncomfortable and Kimo went nuts. Held him by the collar while he was going off but he remained in an enraged state. Then took him off to the side into Amy Pang's garage.
Meanwhile, Tuffy was reacting to Kimo and Kahoa had a hard time holding him. I decided to grab Tuffy's rope and soon enough they both calmed down.
So I walked both Tuffy and Kimo back down the street with the two puppies behind.
After a while, I gave Tuffy back to Kahoa and we had a walk with no apparent problems even when Izzy and Kimo came close to each other.
On the way back though, Kimo was leading the way as he seemed in a hurry to get back in the safety of home.

The rubbish truck finally came today after not coming yesterday (the usual day). Gave Kimo treats as the truck went up the street and then back down.
Then I figured I might as well put the trash bins away. Coco was out and started barking at me. So I went over and had him sit for treats.
Then coming back, Pat and Roxene (who was over visiting) came out with Keith and I volunteered to take him for a stroll. Keith still likes to pull, but there were places he wanted to sniff and I let him.
Coming back down Keith acted up at the end of the leash so I sat down with him until both he and Kimo calmed down.
Continued putting away the bins. Decided to see Keith would react to Charlie. Charlie came up to the gate and a little surprisingly (at the time) Keith shied away from going to the gate.
Continued up the street and Keith struggled going up. He wanted to turn back. So I sat down with him across Friday's house until he calmed down a bit.
More barking from Kimo. Sit down again.
Pat came out probably because I was taking so long.
She didn't know about Charlie so we go to meet Charlie. This time Keith goes up the gate. He seems OK at first but then growled/barked a little and Charlie went back down the steps.
Then I saw Sam and Stanley walking, so I told Pat I'm going to take Keith up to them. I started trotting up the street to get him going and he followed.
Walked around a bit before going to the garage. Then walked around the car so he would follow me.
Finally Keith gets to go home. Take him through Pat's front yard. Kimo barks as we go up the street. Sit down on the steps holding Keith until Kimo gave up barking and walked away from the railing. OK Keith you can go home and he scampers into the front door.

Frontline Plus vs. K9 Advantix
Though they're supposed to do the same thing (kill fleas), Frontline and Advantix are two different products with different ingredients.
The websites are www.frontline.com and www.k9advantix.com - they list the active ingredients there. Frontline is fipronil, Frontline Plus also contains (S)-methoprene; Advantix is imidacloprid and permethrin.
Fipronil is a broad spectrum insecticide that disrupts the insect central nervous system by blocking the passage of chloride ions through the GABA receptor and glutamate-gated chloride (GluCl) channels, components of the central nervous system. This causes hyperexcitation of contaminated insects' nerves and muscles.
Methoprene is a juvenile hormone (JH) analog which can be used as an insecticide that acts as a growth regulator. Methoprene is an amber-colored liquid with a faint fruity odor which is essentially nontoxic to humans when ingested or inhaled. It is used in drinking water cisterns to control mosquitoes which spread dengue fever and malaria.
Imidacloprid is a systemic insecticide which acts as an insect neurotoxin and belongs to a class of chemicals called the neonicotinoids which act on the central nervous system of insects with much lower toxicity to mammals. The chemical works by interfering with the transmission of stimuli in the insect nervous system.
Permethrin is a common synthetic chemical, widely used as an insecticide, acaricide, and insect repellent. It belongs to the family of synthetic chemicals called pyrethroids and functions as a neurotoxin, affecting neuron membranes by prolonging sodium channel activation. It is not known to rapidly harm most mammals or birds, but is dangerously toxic to cats[1][2] and fish.

It is usually used to kill adult fleas quickly on an infested animal to give immediate relief for a day. It is then usually followed up with some other longer-term flea preventative to prevent reinfestation.

Though Kimo looked OK (after a quick loo), saw a bunch of fleas on Jojo. Maybe they jumped from Kimo to Jojo? Anyway, decided to try Hartz UltraGuard Plus on Jojo. I had bought this in the past from Longs, but it didn't seem to have any effect when I tried it on Kimo. And since I wasn't using it anyway... So we'll see, but I'm not keeping my hopes up.
What's in this thing? According to the box, the active ingredients are Phenothrin and (S)-Methoprene.

Isabella uses Orange TKO which is all-natural. OK, what's that?
It's actually a citrus cleaner/degreaser made from the peel of the orange. Don't see anything on the website about fleas.
