Indy goes to tennis

Lori told me Sunday that Cathy was going to bring Indy to tennis, so I fed Kimo early and went over to her mom's house before tennis.

Spider and Indy were barking furiously by the fence as usual. I kneeled down by the fence and gave them some chicken jerky. They took the food, but still barked and Spider took a nip in my thigh. Little damage, but I see four teeth marks.

Then I went inside against the advice of mom. And continued feeding. Indy eagerly came up to eat and was kind of pushy to eat more. Spider would eat and run. But at least he stopped barking except for one stretch. I tossed the food to him for him to resume eating. Spider was affectionate to Cat's mom. But it takes a while for him to warm up. She said when he first came, he would stand outside in the rain.

Cathy brought Indy to tennis and Ann came out to greet her. At first Cat walked her outside on the grass.

Bry (the guy who's supposed to be shy with dogs since he got bitten) pet her. Later Bob took her for a walk. Sujin carried her in her lap. And later I saw she was in Bob's lap too!

Koa on the loose

I took Kimo out for his morning walk. Koa was by the gate, so I let him out and he took off down the street. We walked following at a distance as he headed down Lolena. We finally caught up to him and since we weren't far from the park I took them to the volleyball court and let them sniff around.

On the way back, the dogs (one brown, one white, but mostly the smaller brown one) were barking at us. The girl started calling the dog to her without too much success. I know the feeling.

holding the collar

I heard a jogger er jogging, so I went outside to keep Kimo from barking.

He was lying down and I knelt down and grabbed him by the collar. I held him and after a while he started growling. I didn't let go and he became more and more intense and nipped me in the arm (though he didn't completely lose it, it was bad enough). I knelt by him to let him smell him and eventually got him to lie dow.

I think he didn't care for how my arm was positioned when I was holding him as it was sort of in front of his face. I should be more careful and approach him more from the side or back and not in front of his eyes where it's more confrontational.

mean dogs get jobs

Nobody has broken out of the Idaho State Correctional Institution in more than 20 years. Prison officials like to think a hard-bitten corps of sentries with names like Cookie, Bongo and Chi Chi has had something to do with that.

The institution is the only state prison in the U.S. to use snarling, snapping sentry dogs to patrol its perimeter.

In a program begun in 1986, 24 mean dogs — mostly German shepherds, rottweilers and Belgian malinois, with a few boxers and pit bulls — roam the space between the inner and outer chain-link fences 24 hours a day, ferociously defending their territory.

Get too close to the fence and they will bare their teeth, bark and lunge. Set foot in their space and they will attack.

The animals themselves are former death row inmates — dogs that were deemed too dangerous to be pets and would have been destroyed at the local pound if they had not been given a reprieve and assigned to prison duty.

tying up dogs to be outlawed

A Senate committee gave unanimous approval last week to a bill that would outlaw lengthy tethering of man’s best friend, a cruelty that is common in backyards throughout the state. The bill would make it a misdemeanor to tie a dog by chain, rope or other attachment to a doghouse, tree, fence or any other stationery object for more than three hours during a 24-hour period. Use of a running line, pulley or trolley system is among the exceptions.

The reasons are clear, as listed in testimony by the Humane Society of the United States:

>> Researchers reported in a 1994 edition of the journal Pediatrics that chained dogs are nearly three times more likely to bite than unchained dogs and more than five times more likely to bite children.

>> The U.S. Department of Agriculture concluded in 1996 that “continuous confinement of dogs by a tether is inhumane.”

>> The American Veterinary Medical Association warned several years ago that people should “never tether or chain your dog because this can contribute to aggressive behavior.”

Koa's tapeworm medicine

After finding tapeworms in Kimo's poop yesterday morning and this morning (though not yesterday afternoon), I saw tapeworms in Koa's poop this morning.

Since I had to go refill Koa's prescription anyway, I went down to Gleason's office and told them about the tapeworm. I was expecting Droncit which is what Kimo's vet gives. Instead I got Drontal Plus.

It turns out that Bayer puts out both products and that Drontal Plus is the same as Droncit (which is praziquantel) plus two more ingredients pyrantel Pamoate and febantel. The other two ingredients act against hookworms and tapeworms.

[2/7/11 via Linda&dogwhispererfans] I use Iverhart Max for my 4guys. I get the 51-100lb size and cut them in half for Toby and Teddy my Border Collie mixes. 2 packages cost me $80 and get me 6 months of heartworm prevention as well as catching roundworms, hookworms and tapeworms . Ingredients are ivermectin, pyrantel pamoate and praziquantel.

So this is another possible treatment for tapeworms. Actually it's for prevention of tapeworms, but maybe it'll treat it too?

From the website, Now, IVERHART MAX® (ivermectin/pyrantel pamoate/praziquantel) Chewable Tablets takes this powerful, proven treatment to the next level to give your pet the most complete protection available against heartworms and roundworms, hookworms, and now, tapeworms.

Kimo and Koa lie down, Kimo growls, Malia's pack again

Took Kimo out for his morning walk, Hershey was already in the house (looking sad as he looked out)

Koa was by the gate and whined when he saw us, so I took him out.
It was a struggle going down the street, but better later

Go to the backyard, Kimo runs up the steps and barked at big Koa. Koa barks at Kimo.
I made both lie down to treats
then took them both back down in back and made them sit & down to chicken jerky.

Back home in the back. Mom opens the door to ask me something and Kimo starts growling. I go between them. Not good.

In the afternoon, Koa got loose. Keith went wild. And so does Kimo.
Take Koa and Kimo out for walk. Malia drives by and says she got a choke chain for Petey. OK, skip volleyball tonight.

Continuing on, I see Ann's daughter walking Fifi & Mochi. I stop by Charlotte's house and wait. I start chatting with Charlotte (and Roy later) and have the dogs lying down. OK, they seemed pretty relaxed.

Back home in back with Kimo. Malia's pack comes by and Kimo starts running back and forth.

Take him out and he breathes heavy at first, lags behind as we start to follow and finally catch up.

Petey lunges a few times, goes after poor Shirley who's walking next to him a few times.

I take Shirley and after a few seconds of struggle, Shirley and Kimo walk OK, though Shirley is pulling (to go next to Malia).

Take Chloe home. Norman takes Petey. And the next lap goes pretty well.

Sunday walk

I decided to take Kimo for a long Sunday walk.

First stop was the friendly dog on Judd.

Then we visited the dog on Bachelot. Last time there were two dogs, this time there was only one. The dog stayed in the garage at first then came out after a while.

Then we visited Chibi. In the past, he would run out to see us. But this time he took his time coming out. I guess because Kimo snubbed him last time. Kimo only briefly sniffed. But at least he sniffed.

Then instead of going home via Laki, I tried going straight up Kealakai. And there were two manic dogs going wild. I guess that's why I started going via Laki.

Malia's pack

The dogs were barking. It was Malia and Norman walking Chloe, Petey, and Shirley

I brought Kimo out and Petey and Kimo went wild at first. Then settled as I decided to walk next to Chloe (trailing the pack).

After the first lap, they decided to go for another lap but took Chloe home.

While waiting Petey got excited and went after Shirley. And Kimo got excited in turn and bit my arm. It took a little while to settle him down.

The next lap didn't go too badly for the most part.

But as we came back, Toni & Troy came back with Koa and Koa got loose and ran after Chloe. I managed to snag Koa and took him back to Troy.

Petey was acting up as we continued the walk back. I told Malia to switch him to her left (so she was between Petey and Kimo) and he behaved better after that.

Kimo and Chloe

The dogs were barking in the afternoon. It was Malia walking Chloe. I brought Kimo along. He growled a little when they sniffed but they seemed OK after that.

Koa and Keith

I took Kimo out in the morning, Koa was whining at the gate, so I took him along. It was a struggle at first. Diana & Max were in garage (I think I let Koa go to her, but not Kimo).

Took Kimo home. Keith was barking, so I sat by Iha curb to see how long it took for Keith to calm down (answer: never, well he wasn't completely frantic but never completely stopped barking)

Walked back and forth, but never quite extinguished the bark.

OK, back up the street. Kona barks at Koa. Mr. Sills peers out.

That afternoon, I took Koa for another walk. I heard Kimo barking, so I walked toward Steven's house. Pat was walking Keith up the street. I stopped. Keith saw Koa then turned around. Pat seemed amused.

go to get Kimo. sit in front. go up past Keith's house. some rxn.

eye Melinda in kitchen, poop on grass, take home.

feed Koa
